Google Top Stories With Open Access Label

Google seems to be testing a new feature for top stories named “Open Access.” I am not sure what open access means, if you know, please comment below. It seems like it might be part of the Google News Showcase but I can be wrong.

This was spotted by Shalom Goodman last night when looking at stories about the Republican debate. He posted this screenshot on X and wrote that he is “Seeing the New York Times using an “Open Access” signal within their thumbnail which tells readers that their Live blog is in front of the paywall.”

I was unable to replicate this feature.

Do any of you know what it is?
